How to Build a Strong Bookcase

It’s easy to choose to buy a flat-pack bookcase, but there is more satisfaction to be gained from getting all of the bookcase fittings together and building a bookcase that isn’t pre-determined! Another benefit to constructing a bookcase from scratch is that it allows for more creative design.

Why choose to build a bookcase over buying a flat-pack bookcase?

• It’s easy! All that is required is wood, bookcase strips and shelf supports – as well as the tools to cut, hammer and screw.
• It allows for more choice. Choose the finish of wood and fixings and determine the height and depth of each shelf.
• Be assured of the strength of each shelf and the weight it can take by choosing superior quality shelf supports.
• Flat-packed bookcases often come supplied with just screws, wood studs or/and plastic shelf supports. These means can’t support a lot of weight, so they aren’t substantial. Choosing a bookcase strip and steel shelf supports will securely support each shelf.

• Loop shelf supports

The Banjo Self Support from SCF Hardware is constructed from steel to provide substantial support for bookcases that will be used to hold books or heavy ornaments. These shelf supports are available in a choice of finishes; choose from electro brass, Florentine bronze and nickel plate. These must be used with a banjo socket.

• Bookcase studs

SCF Hardware stock a 5mm diameter bookcase stud made from steel for load bearing. More efficient than wood studs, these steel bookcase studs have a load capacity of 80kg! Choose an electro brass or nickel plate finish.

Designed for surface fixing, bookcase strips have a low profile, reduce the number of fixing holes required and prevent damage to the external sides of the unit. The flat bookcase strip from SCF Hardware is constructed from steel, making it hardwearing and resilient.
