How to Refurbish Wooden Desks with Furniture Fittings

 |  Furniture Tips

Wooden desks bring a classic charm to any home or business office. However, over time they can become worn, damaged and lose their appeal. That’s why we’ve put together a list of ways to refurbish old wooden desks with new furniture fittings such as new drawer runners, sturdy table legs and decorative wooden mouldings.

Follow our step-by-step guide for how to refurbish old wooden desks with new furniture fittings.

  1. Desk Table Legs

Depending on the original quality of the desk, fresh table legs are an opportunity to improve desk sturdiness and change the style. It is also helpful if you want to adjust the height of the desk by selecting table legs with a different length to the original set.

  1. Cable Tidies

Jungle-like vines of cables are a common problem for many desks. However, this can be resolved by fitting cable tidies. Once you’ve found a wooden cable tidy you like, you’ll need to drill a hole where you would like the cables to run. Use the cable tidy as a stencil to mark a circle with a pencil.

  1. Decorative Wooden Mouldings

Working on desks that lack aesthetic appeal? You can bring wooden desks back to life with furniture fittings such as decorative wooden mouldings. Search for decorative wooden appliques that can be fixated (using wood glue) to the sides or drawer panels of the desk.

  1. Fresh Drawer Runners

If the old wooden desks have drawers for storage, the drawer runners can become warped and damaged over time. Storage of heavy office items such as files and paperwork can put strain on the runners. Install a fresh pair of drawer runners and the refurbished desk will work as good as new!

Try using soft close drawer runners to give old wooden desks a luxurious upgrade.

  1. Finishing

Refurbishing old wooden desks with new furniture fittings will help aesthetically and improve how the desk works. However, nothing screams refurbished furniture like a new coat. Try using Rubio Monocoat, which comes in 40 different wood tones, and re-stain the desk. If you’ve refurbished with cable tidies, table legs or decorative wood appliques, stain these parts individually before fitting them to the desk.

Looking to easily change height of wooden desks? Consider using adjustable furniture feet or legs for a simple solution. Alternatively, if you have an enquiry about our other furniture fixings or cabinet hardware, feel free to call our friendly team on 0800 298 7141 to discuss your project.
